bau 25: "bau NOW" celebrates the group's second anniversary. Inaugurated in January 2005, bau continues to serve as a focal point of Beacon's new vitality, creating space for an ever evolving group of artists to find their voices and engage with the surrounding community. This group exhibition includes painting, sculpture, mixed media, installation and photography by 2007 members Vivian Altman, Gary Jacketti, Joanne Klein, Franc Palaia, Christopher Staples and Elizabeth Winchester.

Vivian Altman’s abstract compositions contain flowing sensual forms with a range of colors that go from subtle to bold. With delicate layering and texture, Altman explores the rich expressive possibilities of different media. Her forms take on a life of their own and the results are both familiar and mysterious.
Gary Jacketti’s work is executed in many genres and mediums. While a large proportion of his imagery is figurative, he also explores organic, geometric and abstract forms in sculpture, installation, painting, drawing and printmaking. In describing his methodology Jacketti reveals, "No pigeonhole exists in which to hide".
Joanne Klein's work has evolved over a twenty year period from early realistic renderings to surrealist landscapes and finally to the current abstractions. She works in oil on canvas and oil pastel on paper. Klein’s paintings are composites of geometric shapes filled with highly saturated color. Deconstruction, reduction and rebuilding is a primary means of developing her imagery. Realization of the essence is always the aim. The art historical movements of Russian constructivism, abstract expressionism and minimalism among others inform her work, as does a strong interest in contemporary architecture.
Franc Palaia's work encompasses several media including illuminated photo-sculpture, hand-colored Polaroids, large scale color digital photography, murals, and lamp design. He also curates, teaches, and makes photo-sculptural outdoor works that incorporate solar powered energy sources.
Christopher Staples is an artist who works in a wide range of media, including photography, collage, assemblage, painting and printing. A resident of Carmel, she serves on the gallery committee of the Putnam Arts Council and recently completed a three-year term on the grants review panel for local arts grants through the New York State Council on the Arts.
Elizabeth Winchester is a painter and printer whose work portrays a life of disorientation and geographic dissonance. Her paintings and prints may include fragments of maps, newspapers, collage or found objects resulting in the creation of a personal topography. There are occasional intimations of aerial landscapes or singing abstract, rhythmic movements. Following the lure of detail, layers begin to unfold, veils lift, revealing increasingly disparate details of an idiosyncratic world.

FRANC PALAIA is presenting a solo show at bau of new large scale photo light boxes which runs through Jan 7, 2007. He will discuss the history and technique of his award winning hand colored SX-70 Polaroids. Franc is also an accomplished painter and muralist, and in 1981 he began hand coloring and manipulating SX-70 Polaroids. In 1985, he received a Polaroid Sponsorship for his singular technique of using oil crayons directly onto the surface of the 3’x3’ Polaroid photographs. Franc transforms these small brilliantly colored images into 4’x4’ light boxes. His luscious, creamy oil crayon colorings on the small originals, when enlarged, resemble broad, dynamic brushstrokes, reminiscent of abstract expressionist’s paintings. The luminous light boxes accentuate the vibrant colors and transform the works into opulent objects, too provocative to ignore. His subject matter includes an infinite collection of classical and contemporary architecture from around the world. He has traveled to over two dozen countries on four continents, never without his trusty 34 year old Polaroid camera. This show includes images from, Greece, Rome, Croatia, Sicily, Sardinia and San Francisco.

Composer Joseph Bertolozzi takes you through the process of his latest work-in progress Bridge Music, a live event where he will compose for and perform upon the Mid-Hudson Bridge, a suspension bridge spanning the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie, NY.
Composer Joseph Bertolozzi will discuss his new project Bridge Music at bau, 161 Main Street in Beacon, NY - Dec 16, at XXpm. Tickets/suggested donation is $5.
Bridge Music is a live event planned for 2009 where Bertolozzi, along with several other percussionists, will physically play a suspension bridge (the Mid Hudson Bridge spanning the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie, NY) using the bridge itself as the instrument. He will discuss his process and techniques and play actual recorded sounds and music from the bridge itself.Bertolozzi is forging a unique identity as a 21st century musician with works ranging from full symphony orchestra to solo gongs. Groups such as the Grammy Award-winning Chestnut Brass Company and The West Point Band perform his music, and he himself has played such diverse venues as The Vatican and The US Tennis Open.

bau will launch its very first artist book project on Sunday, November 19 - at 6pm, along with the poetry of Elia Gurna and a performance of einLab.

In a collaboration of seven bau members, all visual artists, and Elia Gurna, an artist, poet and performer herself, Elia’s text “The Bear That Crosses the River” has been illustrated and incorporated into a book. Inspired by Elia’s poetry, each page of the book was designed uniquely and differently, reflecting the various styles and media of bau’s artist members. The lines of the poem that correspond to the images were typed by Elia on an old-fashioned typewriter on vellum paper.

A limited edition of ten books is available for $100 for each book.
Each copy of “The Bear That Crosses the River” contains of eight pages of original art work (7" x 12") and Elia’s complete poem.

einLab are Elia Gurna and Ben Lam, an artist team based in Beacon and Queens, New York. Visual artists with backgrounds in literature and music, they have been creating sound pieces since 2002. Past collaborator, guitarist Mark Di Donna, joined the team's performing lineup in 2005. Collectively they share an interest in visual art and combining instrumentation and poetry.

Their audio pieces have been featured in such exhibitions as Flow: Navigating the Super Paradigm at Collaborative Concepts in Beacon, Cityscapes: Urban Poetry Mass at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, where in addition, they were broadcast on CBC Radio, Queens International 2004 at the Queens Museum of Art in New York, Collaboration 1 at the Center For Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia, and Windows On Main St. at the Howland Public Library in Beacon.

einLab has also contributed a media specific intervention to a series produced by Vienna's museum in progress which appeared in the Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard's New York Times supplement, and Art in General & e-flux's Arts & Leisure in New York. Most recently, they have adapted their sound pieces to a live medium, with window display performances at chashama's 44th Street gallery, appearances at the beacon artist union's “Take Another bau - On Sundays” event series, art, music + chaircuts at ez loft, and a radio performance on WKCR's Live Constructions.

The Muddy Cup Coffee House is opening its 6th location in Poughkeepsie, in the beautifully restored Shwartz building at 305 Main St. The café is currently thriving in Staten Island, Hudson, Albany, Beacon and soon Schenectady. And the curatorial partnership begun at the Beacon café continues in Poughkeepsie.

Now add to that mixture all the festivities of Weekend on Main, and there's a really big show. Weekend on Main is a highly publicized, quarterly event sponsored by the City of Poughkeepsie in conjunction with many merchants, artists and residents. It coincides with The Bardavon’s annual Celebration of Lights, including lighting the tree and fireworks. It never fails to draw thousands to downtown.

In celebration, bau presents @ The Muddy Cup, is proud to curate a show focusing on Poughkeepsie/Hudson Valley artists. All artists living or working in the immediate area are invited to submit 1 piece of wall hung art up to 48". It's a big fabulous space and should be able to accommodate about 40-50 works.

on the project "neXXXt - In The Waiting Room":

'FILLING IN' or ' BRIDGING THROUGH' light.

Light as creator.

As the Kabala says reality is build up from the participation of body, mind and heart. We could say also that all good works are also made out of these 3 elements.Your piece comprehends those for me.

a - The geometric mural, the mind.

b - The illustrations, the heart.

c - And the human bodies, the body.

And of course we could say that each of the 3 parts of the show have the 3 elements within them. Instead of expressing these realms you chose to visit them on tip toes. You - hide / present / hide - them with the delicacy of an Indian magician. Coloring empty areas which previously existed? Filling preexisting empty hearts with love? Is it just male sexual 'filling in': filling in a room, a body, shapes on paper, etc.? The giving light looks for vessels? Or creates them? Are you the one who fills in all those containers or is the light which creates from scratch all those results? Kabala says that it is the light which creates the vessel -the vessel does not create the light - Following this reasoning the light didn't find pre-existing vessels - the cartoons, the mind, geometry... actually the light created them. I think this is the most interesting point of the show, the questioning of what comes first, the light or the vessel. It is a difficult show due to its hidden conceptual charge. And you were right, how could you talk about its different layers in 5 minutes? It could also be pointed out - from a current psychological point of view - the 'multiple personalities' issue as another strong reading. But I've felt spiritual meanings instead. Despite the first apparent disconnection of its parts I find it - as I've tried to explain it - carrying a strong and hidden unity. The superb geometric mural - like a cardiovascular device/screen - is monitoring our pumping 'in' and ‘out’. It is helping us see and more importantly listen to our depths. To better achieve that ideal state of happiness we all seek with mind, heart and body.

bau is growing

bau/beacon artist union, the artists’ collective (currently 8 members) operating a gallery space on Main Street in Beacon, NY is expanding its membership.

Since January 2005 bau has been organizing and curating exhibitions of member and guest artists every month. These critically acclaimed shows have been accompanied by numerous auxiliary events, such as film/video screenings, art talks, theatrical and music performances and socio-critical presentations. Thus bau became a meeting place for the art community in the Hudson Valley area, attracting a growing number of visitors from the city.

bau’s success is based on its mission as an independent exhibition space run by its member artists.

To operate the gallery space continuously and professionally, incurring cost are divided among all members, and are determined for each upcoming year (approx. $100/month per member).
A bau membership requires a commitment for one full year. Meetings are held regularly every month. All members participate in administrative roles.

bau is a profit oriented incorporated enterprise where a percentage of sales - currently 10% of members’ sales - are reinvested to help bau grow. Members' financial contributions are used for bau's operating expenses. Any additional assets from sales, donations or fundraising are used for bau's development.

A bau membership offers members the opportunity to present their projects in one solo show and one optional group show each year. Besides the possibility of mounting shows bau provides a stage for the realization of experimental projects, opportunities for voluntary curatorial tasks, and becoming connected to a fast growing network of artists, curators, galleries, media and collectors.

A bau membership is not limited to artists working in the field of visual arts.

"Observing life and reflecting on it has always been a great source of pleasure for me. I am mesmerized by all of it. I believe in destiny and work with chance. (This may seem contradictory, but it best describes my approach.)" So says the artist, Egon Zippel, as introduction to "BITS, PIECES, GOLD.... AND WAITING" his first solo show after a seven-year hiatus. This installation provides a lucid commentary on the quotidian: the corporate symbols which saturate our consciousness; the myriad documentation required of daily life; the commercial hyperbole foisted upon us from all quarters.

BITS AND PIECES encompass several parts:

The MMMNC-SERIES includes paintings incorporating agglomerations of corporate symbols used in a metaphoric way which appear in new combinations and constellations while different parts of each may be shown or omitted, or transformed. They combine into landscapes, orbit as planets and UFOs, try to usurp each other in pseudo-ornamental friezes, demonstrating the agility with which they can create new contexts and realities…
The LIFE/LIVE SERIES consists of visual fragments and leftovers from managing the artist’s daily life, not planned, not foreseeable, they have fulfilled a "real" purpose, and tell a lot about our daily life: bits, pieces, fragmentation: c’est la vie. When did you last have the feeling of living a "whole" life?
The TO-DO-LISTS - compiled over years and several countries, they consist of notes, scribbling in a variety of languages, diminutive sketches, stains and usage marks. The lists are on choice documents, sometimes funny, sometimes absurd: immigration papers, marriage license applications, consignment forms. At times the juxtaposition of absurdities is pretty funny, but there is also a more serious element - like a world-weary diary.

GOLD is represented by a series of gilded sculptures and objects, some derived from corporate symbols, some from a carver’s interpretation of Native American artifacts, some from … chicken bones.
WAITING: here you can see for whom, when and where the artist has been waiting during these last years.

Egon Zippel was born in Romania to German parents in 1960. Within a few years the family moved back to Germany, where he pursued humanistic studies in ancient Greek, Latin and philosophy.
After a tour in the army and graduating from the University of Mannheim in commercial design, he was awarded a Fulbright to study at Georgetown and UT, Austin in 1984. Moving to New York in 1985, he studied computer graphics at NY Institute of Technology and worked as commercial artist. In 1986 he returned to Germany and started to work and show as a conceptual artist. After living in Milan for two years, he entered into postgraduate studies at Staedel Frankfurt Art Academy/ Institute for New Media with Peter Weibel. In 1996 he came back to NY and began working in computer/marketing/design/ fashion-related projects. In 2002 he launched www.ezhelp.us, a hot-line for computer problems and personal training.

Spire Studios in Beacon to host "Change of Altitude: An exhibit of artists from EDGE Gallery in Denver, CO." June 23 - July 16.

Spire Studios in Beacon will be exhibiting the work of a group of Denver based artists as one half of an exchange between artists of Beacon, NY and Denver, CO. The Denver artists are all members of EDGE Gallery, an artist run contemporary gallery that has been a staple of the Denver art scene for 20 years. The artwork of the Beacon artists working under the name Via Beacon will be on exhibit EDGE Gallery. Both groups are working within the constraints of artwork that will compress to fit into a standard Postal Service flat rate box and then expand when installed in the gallery.

The concurrent Denver-Beacon exhibits will open on June 23 and run through July 16. The exhibit at Spire Studios will open with a reception starting at 7pm on June 23. Hours for the exhibit will by Sat, Sun 12-6pm and by appointment.

TONY MOORE: WHO KNOWS WHY?

In Tony Moore’s latest sculpture installation, a provocative assemblage of approximately 150 clay body casts of his own head, we are treated to an experience of tremendous power and relevance for our times. Moore has ingeniously placed a number of these “heads” on the floor, covering the entire gallery, while the preponderance of the casts are vertically stacked in 6 steel cages, as a monolith in the center of the room. The walls have been left blank.

Video artist Neil Ira Needleman at bau:

What do slice-of-life ethnic family documentaries and hyper-rhythmic abstract videos have in common? Both visual styles can be seen in the video works of Neil Ira Needleman, an award-winning video artist who will be screening a selection of recent works at beacon artist union (bau) on Sunday, June 4 at 6 pm.

“I don’t have any single style,” Neil said, “but I do tend to clump my works together into stylistically similar series.” At the bau screening, Neil will show and discuss works from his Shut up, sit down, and listen to your elders family documentary series, as well as selections from his more visually oriented Infinity Fragments series.

“In a way there’s something for everyone,” Neil observed. “You can laugh at my old aunts kvetching and disagreeing about everything and anything (Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn), and you can sit back and let my pulsating images give your optic nerves a roller coaster ride (Bechet Vibrato Fragments).

Neil’s life as a creative person encompasses two separate fields. “As a creative-for-hire copywriter/creative director I’ve had a 25-year career working for advertising agencies in New York and Connecticut. Then there’s my video work. That I do for ME—and audience members who have an adventurous sense of vision.”

Since 2002 Neil’s video work has been screened in festivals and venues in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, the U.K., Switzerland, Paris, and many other places around the world. He is a winner of a Jury’s Choice award from the Black Maria Film Festival (Cellular Activity: Split Screen) and a Best of Festival from the Berkeley Film & Video Festival (Dell Hell). In addition to this screening at bau, Neil has been invited to show a selection of his work at the upcoming Berkeley Film & Video Festival.

A pithy take on the life I’ve lived so far:

I was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1957 and learned filmmaking in the alleys of Brooklyn. Somewhere along the way I got lost in a dark tunnel that led me into a career in advertising. Now that I have stumbled into the daylight again, I am rededicating myself to tinkering with motion images. I hope it’s not too late to regain some sort of vision.

We arrived six weeks after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Everyone had gone and the only traces of life were abandoned homes and personal belongings scattered throughout the silent city. The destruction was so unfathomable that it stole our breath away like a sucker punch to the gut. Each day we were continually reminded of one thing, the storm spared nothing and no one.
Wandering through neighborhoods that were completely destroyed, we encountered endless destruction of personal spaces and cherished possessions. What had once been private was now public, what had once captured memories was now stained and abandoned, what had once represented happiness, wealth, or success was now trash, waiting to be hauled to the dumpsite. In each location we experienced a certain spiritual presence within the emptiness and felt witness, even connected somehow, to the profound impact that this singular event had on the residents of the Gulf Coast.

These intimate large-scale color photographs quietly explore abandonment in a post Katrina world where personal memories and possessions were claimed by the unforgiving water of the storm.

Wyatt Gallery
Photographer Wyatt Gallery (yes that is his real name) got his love for architecture and space from his parents whom were both architects in Philadelphia. Gallery has been recognized as one of the "top 25 photographers under 25" by The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University/powerHouse Books and one of the top "30 under 30" by PDN Photo District News magazine. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to photograph Spiritual Sites of Trinidad in 1999 in addition to a Rosenberg Travel Grant to photograph Spiritual Sites of the Caribbean in 1997. Mr. Gallery graduated with a BFA and multiple honors from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and recently concluded three years of teaching Advanced Color Photography at University of Pennsylvania's School of Design. His new work examines the recent natural disasters and quietly captures the spirit of the incomprehensible power of nature and "man's" resilience to persevere.
In 2005, Gallery was selected as a one of ten finalists in the annual PDN Travel Photo essay competition and one of three finalists in the Photographic Center Northwest's exhibition Focused. He was one of four finalists in the 2004 Photo Review Magazine competition as well and has been commissioned by many magazines such as: The New York Times Sophisticated Traveler, Mother Jones, Architectural Record, Newsweek, Geo Saison, Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel, Outside, and Vibe. His work is featured in Deborah Willis' book Black, A Celebration of A Culture and the forthcoming Saturday Night, Sunday Morning.
Recently, Gallery's work has been exhibited by various galleries and in photography fairs such as: Photo LA 2006, Photo New York 2005, Photo LA 2005, Photo San Francisco 2005, and Photo New York 2004. His work is in many corporate collections such as American Express, Wiley & Son Publishing, New York University, Citi Habitats and the homes of numerous personal collectors.

Will Steacy
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Will received a B.F.A in Photography and Imaging from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2003, where he received an award for creative excellence as a graduating senior. Will's work and vision are based on exploring the relationships that exist between man and his environment. Will is currently working on several long term projects; in The Long Way Home Will explores the idea of a journey gone wrong as he drifts through America, he investigates the effects the decline of industry has had on the American workplace in The Ruins. He lives and works in New York.

bau – beacon artist union continues its “Sunday Series: Take Another bau” with a jazz performance by two very talented young musicians from the Hudson Valley area. The fact that Lewis R. Greeney, contrabass and Ben Newsome, saxophones, are both jamming regularly with jazz master Marvin “BuGaLu” Smith indicates the quality standard of both young men. With the upcoming session at bau, the artist run exhibition space on 161 Main Street in Beacon once more provides a platform for unusual artistic explorations.

No cover charge. Donations, as always, are appreciated and go to the performing artists.

Lewis R. Greeney:

Although he's always been an avid jazz fan Lewis began his musical career playing reggae bass for ex-Bob Marley sideman Natty Wailer. After completing his music degree from SUNY New Paltz He plunged head first into a life of late night jazz jam sessions throughout the Hudson Valley area. It has been at these ongoing sessions that he met many of the musicians he is currently working with. The two most influential band leaders he has played under have been Marvin BuGaLu Smith - the amazing drummer, and former Rat-Pack guitarist Al Defino.

"The Jam Session is a way of life for me. It’s where ideas are shared. Without the Session the music has no way to breathe and grow.
The goal of our duo project is to deliver the same strength, intensity and spontaneity while show-casing the full tonal spectrum of our instruments.
When it's just up to the two of us and tenor-man Newsome starts to dig in deep there's no telling what direction a song will take."

Ben Newsome:

21 years old, born and raised in the Hudson Valley.

“I started playing alto saxophone when I was 9 (later switched to tenor in middle school) participated in the kingston's'kools jazz festival 97-2002, Disney Magic music days 2000, rondout school jazz festival 2000, Rondout Jazz festival 2005, Beleayre jazz festival 2005.
I currently study jazz at the conservatory of music at SUNY Purchase.
Some bands I've played/performed with: Big Blue Big band, Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra, USAF Band of Liberty, New York Funk Alliance, Grey 46 project, Celebration – w/master drummer Marvin “BuGaLu” Smith.”

NY session keyboardist and Jazz synthesist Neil Alexander continues his series of informal local solo laptop computer performances called Logical Oscillator, as a featured performer at bau - beacon artist union in Beacon NY. Well known for his forays into experimental electronic jazz, and no stranger to innovation and experimentation, Alexander will perform a set of entirely new, highly improvisational music, taking full advantage of the computer’s versatility to do on the spot arrangements and instantaneous sound design. No two performances are ever the same. According to Alexander, this new music is meant to be experienced on more of a subliminal level, rather than “listened” to in the strict sense of the word.

Neil Alexander – www.pdogrecords.com : Born in Queens in 1960, Neil was performing in bands by age 13; composing and arranging for big band at 14; and in the recording studio by 16. He has composed for and performed with multimedia theatrical productions (in which he also served as musical director); accompanied and composed for Modern dance since 1982, and penned more than 50 compositions for small ensemble. Critics describe Veteran NY keyboard phenomenon Alexander as “juiced”, “masterful”. From his powerhouse electric post-bop quartet NAIL, independent film scores and highly juiced electronic solo work to his multikeyboard work for Funkadelic founder Tal Ross and the now famous Pink Floyd tribute "The Machine," Neil treats every project he's involved in with the same full out attitude, whether it's performing Stravinsky or Jeff Beck, playing synthesizers or harpsichord, and from blues to Bebop. He has done sessions as both player and programmer, has composed for and/or been musical director for a variety of modern Dance and Avant Garde theater companies. He has received grants from meet the composer while composing for dance; performed works by Stravinsky, Ives, Cage (among others); managed his own ensembles both electric and acoustic; taught music clinics at both high school and college level in sequencing, sampling, and MIDI; produced concerts in both small venues and large outdoor settings; and done sound design and music concrete (including assembling sound effect libraries and live tape manipulation). In addition, he has composed more than 50 works for small ensembles of various instrumentation.

Vivian Altman builds up the surface of her mixed medium paintings with dense textures, lines and patterns, creating a busy noisy sensation.
Although Altman's paintings are not sound specific, there are a lot of opportunities for the viewers' imagination. sorry, i don't have time to participate - was the answer i had first in my mind.

but then again: i produce in my daily life such a large amount of visual fragments and
left-overs. these fragments are, when taken out of context, interesting and fascinating esthetic expressions. what i like about them so much is that they are not planned, not foreseeable, yet they fulfill a 'real' purpose.
when put together, they create a whole new visual/esthetic 'thing'. it tells
a lot about my/our daily life; bits, pieces and fragments. that's what our life
is... or did YOU recently have the feeling of living a 'whole' life? i bet not...

my other contribution: texts on labels and ads... when you read them, those well-crafted
fragments of literature, they seem to be acceptable, part of our language. but hearing
them, read by the people like you and me [the target group of those ads]... that's where
the fun [or pain] starts...

In his "Electric Chair Cuts," he satirizes the notion that we are all only a haircut away from possessing a sense of authenticity that distances us from the crowd. He straps a willing accomplice into a chair, and with a pair of amplified scissors attached by wires to a power-pack on his back, attacks the unruly mane of hair. By theatricalizing the "performance" of a haircut, Nelson suggests that the codes of individuality as filtered through fashion, are just that -- theater. einLab are Elia Gurna and Ben Lam, an artist team based in Beacon and Queens, New York. Visual artists with backgrounds in literature and music they have been collaborating since 2002.
Recent addition to the artist team, Mark Di Donna, guitarist, shares a mutual interest in visual art and combining music and poetry. He has been a regular contributor to various projects.

einLab's audio pieces have been featured as part of Flow at Collaborative Concepts in Beacon, Cityscapes: Urban Poetry Mass at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Queens International 2004 at the Queens Museum of Art in New York, Collaboration 1 at the Center For Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia, and various other exhibitions.

einLab has also contributed a media specific intervention to a series produced by Vienna’s museum in progress which appeared in the Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard's New York Times supplement, and Art in General & e-flux's Arts & Leisure in New York. Most recently, they have adapted their sound pieces to a live medium, with window display performances at chashama’s 44th Street gallery and an upcoming appearance at the beacon artist union’s “Take Another bau – On Sundays” event series. einLab hopes to introduce their aural landscapes to a wider audience and continue blurring the line between installation art and live music.

b a u is introducing a series of Sunday performances to be held at its gallery at 161 Main St, Beacon, NY.These events will take place at 6pm on the 1st and 2nd Sundays of each month to bracket and extend the interest that the 2nd Saturday openings have begun to draw to the area. Diverse and experimental, focusing on local artists, performances such as electronica, poetry reading, drama, spoken word, video and jazz will be showcased. Occasional talks by exhibiting artists, as well as panel discussions of topical interest to artists will also be included in the program. The gallery is a small, intimate space and can accommodate an audience size of 20-30. During clement summer weather the backyard may be used to extend that to about 40 people.

On Sunday Dec 11 at 6pm, b a u will feature legendary jazz master Marvin BuGaLu Smith, percussion, drums, and spoken words. Accompanying him will be Andrew Greeney and Kesai Riddick, on drums and percussion. Smith‘s playing has been heard on stages around the world for more than forty years. Growing up in Englewood, NJ, Smith started early. At eight years old, he was already working with his older brother, Buster Smith, a prominent drummer who performed with Eric Dolphy. At sixteen, he worked for the Town Sound Recording Company and recorded with such stars of the music world as James Brown, Lola Falana, and Sam and Dave among others.In 1969, Smith joined singer Rocky Roberts' band and moved to Italy. During nearly 25 years, he also performed with many of the top names in Jazz including Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Mal Waldron, Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp and Sun Ra. Shepp asked Smith to join his band in 1982. Over the next five years he further evolved what he calls "The Timing Of The Drum", a philosophy based upon the idea that rhythm in music follows the Universal Rhythms of Life. One night in 1987, in NYC he was asked to sit in for a set with the Sun Ra band. Afterwards, Ra immediately offered Smith a gig that continued for 5 years. In 1992, Marvin released Be Impartial to Yourself, recorded live at “Visiones” in New York City with Cecil McBee and Kirk Lightsey. This recording showcases the power and creative energy Marvin brings to every group he plays with. Currently, Marvin continues to stay busy as a leader, sideman and instructor in New York.

Listening to Marvin BuGaLu Smith means being connected to the healing power of his sounds, rhythms, melodies - experiencing vitality, joy, love, ...life.

In the fall of 2004, six artists at work in Beacon founded the art collective bau, opening a storefront gallery on Beacon’s Main Street in the center of the developing West End.

bau – beacon artist union, became an instant success. By utilizing the exhibition space and the backyard of the premises as a platform for experimental and conceptual projects bau immediately became an energizing inspiration for the group, as well as being highly acclaimed by the public and the press. Abby Luby’s review in PULSE magazine of the exhibition bau 9: blind offline defines bau’s artistic direction in one sentence:

“Artists Albert and Jacketti are members of the Beacon Artist Union, a group of artists that has continually produced conceptual “think” shows that are on the edge.”

Within a short period of time bau hosted many artists working in different media and disciplines. In spanning the presentation of the digital arts, art talks, documentary film and video screenings, performance and performing arts, to frequently held live music events during the past summer, bau became a vital kaleidoscope for Beacon’s creative life.
By the end of 2005 bau will now undergo personnel changes, making a “transition” from six founding members to eight.

Four of the original members, Kathy Feighery, Angelika Rinnhofer, Chris Albert and Peter Iannarelli will leave to pursue their individual careers, while Gary Jacketti and Harald Plochberger, the sustaining members, will remain with the newly expanded group. These artists are to be commended for providing the outstanding contribution of their works over the past year. It is only because of their founding vision and artistic impact that bau was established in such a short period of time.

bau 12: transition will highlight the works of the new members and place them within the context of the departing member’s work.

English-American artist and Cold Spring resident Tony Moore will present woodfired ceramic sculpture that references our current socio-political condition. A wall, a whip and shoe polish are the media for Beacon resident Gary O’Connor’s wall-drawing. Still-life collages and drawings by Beacon resident Vivian Altman will reveal her investigative process. Poughkeepsie resident Elizabeth Winchester, who came from San Francisco to work in the Hudson Valley, will contribute painting and monotype prints that utilize topographic maps. Carmel resident Christopher Staples will present large format figurative photo based images, while the Romanian born, German artist and Manhattan resident Egon Zippel will provide DVD video clips from his light installations and Polaroid drawings.

Sustaining bau project 2005/06 member and Beacon resident Gary Jacketti and Viennese artist, Ossining resident Harald Plochberger will respectively present a ceramic mosaic, rubber tire sculpture installation and conceptually based geometric painting and drawing.

Vivian Altman

Vivian Altman utilizes abstracted life forms in her delicately layered and textured two dimensional compositions. Her imagery, though seemingly familiar, seeks to create a mysterious reality.

Gary Jacketti

Gary Jacketti’s work is executed in many genres and mediums. While a large proportion of his imagery is figurative, he also explores organic, geometric and abstract forms in sculpture, installation, painting, drawing and printmaking. In describing his methodology Jacketti reveals, “No pigeonhole exists in which to hide”.

Tony Moore
Tony Moore’s recent woodfired ceramic sculptures reference socio-political events and the human condition, namely issues of Church and State and the war in Iraq. His archetypal imagery depicts archaic helmets, fortresses or memorial stones, often coupled with impressed hand or foot-prints, suggesting the universal presence of humanity. He is a painter and sculptor, whose works are represented in international museum collections,
including the Guggenheim Museum and Brooklyn Museum, USA.

Gary O’Connor
Gary O’Connor says of his installations that any thoughts he might have about the works are provisional at best. Recently he prefers to work in a way that demystifies the notion of “talent”, drawing instead upon the more basic skills of preparation, steadiness and attention. He is interested in where his attention is placed, such as in the privilege of artistic production as opposed to the mundane activity of polishing boots. His practice is engaged with such fundamental questions as, “What is created when I am consciously engaged with my surroundings? What is the experience I have when no one activity, or its product, is more privileged over another?” O’Connor answers, “The first thing I notice is that I’m happy.”

Harald Plochberger
Harald Plochberger is an interdisciplinary artist and painter, concerned with the exploration of the structure of mathematics and language that is visually articulated within a geometrically abstract vocabulary. Reality, as it is perceived in our daily routines, on TV and in the media, also provides an analytical context for his sociologically derived projects.

Christopher Staples
Christopher Staples blurs the line between photography and painting. In recent photographic works printed on canvas, titled “ShadowPlay, Faith”, the found, digitally un-manipulated and therefore uncontrived figurative imagery captures a moment in time. Similar to the artist’s other photographic works, the perception of the moment, implies meaning.

Elizabeth Winchester
Elizabeth Winchester’s paintings portray a chronicle of geographic dissonance; a journey that has been without route or roadmap, without guide or glossary. The paintings include extensive use of maps, newspaper, collage or found objects resulting in a personal topography. There are occasional intimations of aerial landscapes when viewed from a distance, suggesting abstract, rhythmic movement. Egon Zippel

bau 12: transition will serve to mark the end of one phase, and the beginning of another by commemorating the moment their intersection. Information on the exhibit will be released in the coming weeks.

bau 11: hudson paths, opens 11.12.05

bau 11: Highland Paths will comprise of two artists, Kathy Feighery, a founding member of bau and Matthew S. Kinney. Both Kinney and Feighery, through their work, seek to convey a unique interpretation of the Hudson Valley landscape that surrounds them. Kinney’s work derives from the ruminations and discoveries he makes out in nature. Animal tracks and vegetation find their way into his intricate, thoughtful sculptural pieces as well as his paintings and drawings. Kinney purposefully records the ephemeral in his work, asking the viewer to take another look at something nature has wrought that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Feighery’s paintings and drawings are distillations of the dramatic landscape she has witnessed in the Hudson Valley. Her unpopulated work seeks to describe the berth of sky and vastness that can still be found in a very populated region.

bau 10: light work lights is the tenth exhibit at
Beacon Artist Union. One of its founding members,
photographer Angelika Rinnhofer, curated the show with
works by three artists, Lisa Jong-Soon Goodlin, Hannah
Frieser, and John Mannion. Each photographer is based
is Syracuse, NY, and all are affiliated with Light
Work. Light Work promotes emerging and established
photographers from the Unites States and around the
world by offering residencies and opportunities to
exhibit and publish photographic art work.
Hannah Frieser was hired one year ago as Light Work’s
Associate Director. She uses photography not only in
the traditional sense of a two-dimensional image, but
often brings in other materials to create
three-dimensional art objects and artist’s books. The
black and white photographs of her series Knickknack
take a closer, slightly upsetting look at small,
decorative ornaments that fill our lives.
Lisa Jong-Soon Goodlin is Chair of the Board of
Directors at Light Work. She started as a volunteer in
1997. Lisa’s concern with society’s wasteful use of
plastic products and paper napkins lead her to recyle
them as art objects. Her scanned napkins take on
abstract shapes, which seem to float on a stark black
surface.
John Wesley Mannion works as Digital Imaging Manager
at Light Work/Community Darkrooms. His haunting images
of abandoned rooms at Pennhurst State Mental Hospital
and School show the remainders of an institution that
closed after a major class action suit. Mannion’s
photographs convey the subtle texture and beauty of
decay, while simultaneously confronting us with
Pennhurst’s horrific past.

tapping their creativity to investigate the effectiveness of electronic communication.
Will their ideas, only written and never verbally communicated, connect?
Can the electronic convenience replicate the personal?

On the Second Saturday in September, the resulting works will be seen together for the first time

"The Dog & Pony Show - Reality Live" opened last Friday with a fabulous Jazz night at BAU. Marvin BU-GA-Lu Smith & Friends once again filled the backyard with incredible energetic bebop. The constantly changing exhibition, thematically revolving around actual political and sociological facts and the reality presented by the media, was contrasted by a rich performance program, thus providing "reality live" and a lot of artistic interaction. The upcoming weekends will provide many more of fascinatinfg live events + significant changes of the exhibition .

bau 8/The Dog & Pony Show – Reality Live is a kaleidoscope of the Arts.
From August 12/05 to September 4/05 the bau exhibition space will be the center of a constantly changing Variety Show bringing together music, performing arts, comedy, visual arts, dance and much more. The period of the whole exhibition term will be subdivided into six parts. Six Opening Receptions will indicate and highlight the changes, bau 8/The Dog & Pony Show, will be undergoing over the weeks.

"In the Classroom" is the title of a raw footage video documentation

photographs taken during a Jam Session with master drummer BU-GA-LU in BAU's and

The result of angelika's life size, predominantly black photograms, and peter's sound piece, played through ten black boomboxes floating on the wall is a boldly graphic visual presentation with an added dizzying cycle of layered spoken words.

Gary jacketti's the book of art, spreads out across the space at bau. Jacketti spent the first week of his exhibit in the bau space, creating collages. Now, the collages have been taken to his studio for the final processes before being returned to bau to be hanged for the prologue reception on friday, april 1st, 6-9 pm.

There were a lot of activities around Beacon on Saturday night, and of course, among them was the kickoff to Gary Jacketti's exhibition, b a u 3: the book of art. With so many events happening, folks needed more time to hit them all. b a u's openings normally run from 6 to 9 pm, but for this night,the busiest time of the entire evening was between 10 and 11. Jacketti will be working in the b a u space throughout the run of the exhibit, creating work that will be completed in time for the prologue celebration on april 1st.

There are two concurrent exhibits on view at The Center for Curatorial Studies Museum Gallery at Bard College through Sunday. Peter Iannarelli is among the artists featured in "This must be the place."
The other exhibit titled "This is not an archive" features peripheral materials that have been assembled by artists, and art groups that characterize the work of those artists. Harald Plochberger will be in the CCS Museum Gallery Saturday afternoon speaking with the public regarding his own contribution to the exhibit, as well as the presentation of material submitted by b a u as a group.

As we here at b a u embarked on our endeavor of shaking things up and out, and trying to present an art venue that is fresh, and immediate, we knew from the start that we wanted to do the same with our web presence. By using a blog, (which is what this site is) we are able to very easily keep our information updated as easily as possible, on our own.
There are several artblogs on the net that offer quite interesting reporting on art events and affairs, as well as offering individual artist's insights into their process.
Our blog has just been added to a "blog aggregator" at www.gallerdriver.com. A blog aggregator immediately lists all of the postings of listed blogs as they are published. This also means that our information is disseminated a little more widely, and we are grateful for that.

If you are so inclined, I suggest taking sometime to review some of the offerings in these blogs, they can be informative, and entertaining.

As for b a u, we have many things planned in the coming months both in the space, for the website, and beyond. Stay tuned for upcoming events.....And, actually, the next event is scheduled for this coming Saturday, Feb 19th. A presentation given by b a u 2 artist, Bo Gehring. Bo will be discussing his work, his process in creating his Virtual Sculptures, and the use of new technologies in the creation of contemporary artwork.

b a u 2: newburgh<>beacon bridge opened on February 12 with another large crowd, and steamed windows.

A deluge of water came down from the ceiling just twenty minutes before the opening, making a mess, and threatening to spoil the event. Thanks to some quick thinking, and quick moving on the part of Harald no artwork was damaged, and the incident along with the ensuing clean up became the performance portion of the evening.
